PsyC-101: Introduction to Psychology of Consciousness

In this course the student will be taught Non-dual meditation practices - learning how to shift the attention from mind to consciousness. He/she will also learn how to heal mind and body through consciousness work. The student will be presented with Carl Rogers' unsurpassed insights and research on the foundation of effective counseling -- empathy and unconditional acceptance. Finally, he/she will learn the four fundamental inquiries of non-duality and how to apply non-duality to healing and counseling.

Teacher
      Gian Paolo Girardi, MS, MA,
Founder of the Brain Optimization Institute and the University of Healing Arts

In his early twenties Gian Paolo pursued studies in engineering in the most prestigious university of Chile — the Catholic University of Santiago. This was a six to seven-year full-time commitment. At age twenty three, he became interested in yoga and the pursuit of happiness and enlightenment - a pursuit that continued for more than 30 years. At 32 he enrolled in post-graduate studies in psychology. After completing 3,000 hours of supervised psychotherapy, and passing required tests for licensing, he obtained his license as a Marriage Family Therapist (MFT).

Gian Paolo practiced psychotherapy full-time for over fifteen years. Eventually, he stopped renewing his license and is presently dedicated full-time to the field of education.  In January, 2005, he and his wife Viviana founded the Brain Optimization Institute and subsequently The University of Healing Arts. As a teacher, Gian Paolo and his associates are intent on communicating what they have learned through a lifetime dedicated to clinical and healing work, personal development and spirituality.

3rd Month
PsyC-103: Brain and Consciousness
.

Here, the student learns how to heal the body and mind by rebalancing the brain's neurotransmitters through nutrition -- diet and supplements. He or she will learn to optimize the Dopamine, Acetyl-choline, Serotonin and Gaba pathways to overcome ADD, memory problems, anxiety, depression, and more.  Brain and mental health are at the foundation of the spiritual life. These skills will help the future Consciousness Psychology Counselor to truly be at the cutting edge of their profession. This course provides them with the option of addressing the client's issues not only from a psychological and spiritual perspective but also with powerful physical interventions. Additionally, the student will realize why focusing on brain nutrition primarily - instead of a thousand other possible issues - provides the best and most consistent results.

4th Month
PsyC-104: The Science of Typology

One of Carl Jung's most powerful insights lead to what is known today as the eight Jungian types -- the extroverted and the introverted types, the intuitive and the sensing, the feeling and the thinking and the judging and probing types. The Myers-Briggs System, based on the Jungian types, is a path to balance and heal the personality and manifest an authentic life. During this course the student will learn how to apply the M-B system to vocational counseling. He/she will learn to administer psychometric tests conducive to the identification of the Myer's Briggs temperament, and use the results to help their client identify their vocation and live an authentic life.  A life aligned with our soul vocation is usually a beautiful, prosperous life.  Living an inauthentic life is a sure recipe for disaster. The training also includes application of typology to healing, counseling and relationships. The student is expected to finish this course with the ability to identify the personality type of their clients after a few minutes into the first session. This is such a valuable tool for the counselor that practicing counseling without knowledge of the M-B system could be considered professional irresponsibility.

PsyC-106: Nutrition and Happiness - The Hidden Connection

Possibly 90% of human disease -- including mental illness - comes from nutritional mistakes. In this course the student will be exposed to an in-depth study of the fundamental scientific principles of the science of nutrition.  Knowing and applying these is the foundation for healing, prevention and health optimization. These include most especially the intelligent use of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Based on solid research, this course alone empower our student to help their clients with sound nutritional advice.  In fact, the principles presented here are the foundation of the nutritional therapy profession.  It is our opinion at UHA that nowadays, considering the epidemics of disease created by nutritional error, this information is essential to become an effective healer or counselor.

P
syC-107: The Soul Level and The Birth of Individuality

In this unique course the student will learn about superconsciousness -- the level of the Soul. Born from pure primordial Energy and Consciousness the soul becomes separated from the One and the struggle for union begins. This struggle leads to a gradual, long evolution known in this plane as spiritual development. Although the separation is only apparent -- an illusion or a play in Consciousness -- it feels very real to the soul. In its long journey towards re-union (notably the Sanskrit word yoga means union and the latin word religion means re-unite) the soul travels through distinct levels of development. A good counselor, to be effective, must understand this issue and be able to assess, at least to some degree, how evolved are their clients.

The student will also learn that "vocation" is a unique, natural inclination specific to each soul.  Lifetime after lifetime, patiently the soul develops this unique talent. When the soul becomes disconnected from its vocation, significant suffering is almost inevitable, until reconnection. A skillful counselor knows how to help their client re-connect.  These and other issues pertaining to the soul level, are presented skillfully by our teacher Helle Brisson, so that our students and future counselors will not fall prey to the illusion that their clients are merely human beings. They will be able to see the client's soul struggling courageously to free itself from suffering and separation. Having the ability to see the client as a soul instead of always as a human being allows for a paradigm shift of tremendous significance in counseling.

This course as well as the previous courses on nutrition (PsyC-103 and PsyC-106) lay the foundation for a 21st century medicine that is affordable and truly healing instead of money-driven. 9th Month
PsyC-109: Cognitive Psychology -- Freedom from Distorted / Negative Thinking

During this course the student learns to use a most powerful tool available from empirical psychology -- cognitive therapy. This powerful approach to mental health helps the client to identify and correct irrational, self-defeating thoughts and beliefs which leads to effectively overcoming depression and anxiety. Additionally, in this course the student will learn to assess and improve self-concept and self-esteem -- the foundations of good mental health.  He or she will learn how to include the spiritual dimension into cognitive psychology, thus generating a most powerful paradigm that transcends rational thinking, leading to faster and deeper transformation. This course is extremely valuable for counselors or anyone working in the field of healing arts.

PsyC-201- The Power of Self-Caring -- a Scientific Path to Happiness

Research done at the Brain Optimization Institute has demonstrated a scientific correlation between the quality of Self-Caring and the level of happiness. In this course the student learns to assess the quality of self-caring and level of happiness for self and others. He or she also learns to coach the client into higher levels of self-caring, which inevitably leads to greater happiness. Self-caring when properly defined involves complex aspects of the relationship with oneself like living an authentic life, establishing meaningful relationships, addressing our spiritual needs and so on. Thus, Self-caring is the foundation to manifesting our life purpose as well as optimal health.  Furthermore, self-caring is the foundation of the spiritual life.

Linde completed her Masters in Spiritual Psychology Counseling at UHA and obtained certifications in Life Coaching and Nutrition with emphasis in Brain Nutrition Counseling at the Brain Optimization Institute. As a Registered Nurse, working with patients for ten years, Linde could realize the superlative value of self-caring. She could see that failure in self-caring leads to mental illness, and eventually loss of one's life, while in-depth understanding of self-caring and systematic application of its principles, leads to physical, mental and spiritual stability, as well as positive inner transformation.

syC-203:  Metaphysics -- a Path to “Victorhood”

In this unique course on metaphysics Helle Brisson introduces the most practical and effective metaphysical techniques available today. The application of these methods is guaranteed to quickly and effectively improve the student's life and later help their clients do the same. The student will learn mysterious aspects of the law of attraction such as the experience-belief cycle and how to use it to produce lasting healing and transformation. He or she will understand why metaphysics, although definitely valuable, it is often met with suspiciousness by teachers of the non-dual and mystical path. In other words, in this course the student will be presented with a balance of pros and cons of metaphysics. Some of the the metaphysical techniques presented include - positive denial, scripting, short affirmations, reminders, and more.  Metaphysics teaches how to generate positive expectations and stay away from negative ones; in this course however, the student is introduced also to a completely different possibility: no-expectations.

PsyC-204: The Four Kingly Yogas

This course begins with a very useful introduction to the main four types of yoga – Bhakti Yoga, The Psycho-physiological Yogas, Karma Yoga and Jnana Yoga. Understanding this classification allows the yoga practitioner, or spiritual aspirant, to choose the right type of spiritual path (or yoga) for him or her -- one that really suits their personality. Although all the four types of yoga are covered extensively throughout the Masters program, in this particular course Suzanne focuses on the power of Bhakti Yoga, and how it figures in the Psychology of Consciousness. The student will learn most especially about the highest form of Bhakti Yoga which is "Surrender to the Divine." Surrender to the Divine, in any form the Bhakti may conceive It, is a fast path to liberation and manifestation of soul potential"

Billions across the planet practice some form of Bhakti Yoga -- Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and so on.  Because most counselors have clients participating in one of these major religions, we consider that a qualified counselor must understand the Bhakti Yoga path -- with its pros and cons.

15th Month
PsyC-206: Karma Yoga - The Yoga of Service

In this course the student will learn about the path of service.  No matter what type of spiritual path we travel, in order to make a living we need to serve others.  The activities associated with making a living usually involve a very significant part of our day. Spiritualizing them is a natural and effective way to progress spiritually. This course helps the student to move from working to serving.

The most challenging aspect of karma yoga -- and the most liberating -- is learning to release expectations in regard to the fruits of our actions.  Every action has consequences, and if we become involved in a positive action it is natural for the ego to expect a reward. However, the reward may or may not come and this uncertainty creates untold suffering for humanity.  Releasing, to some extent at least, the expectation for rewards is Karma Yoga. Being unconcerned for the fruits of actions is liberating.

The student will also learn about the law of karma or cause and effect -- its complexities and limitations. For instance, what does it mean that the law of Karma is not punitive? Also covered will be free will vs. predetermination and how these two perspectives interrelate. Other issues presented involve healing the relationship with money, the importance of living a life free of expectations, how to act from Consciousness so that we do not create karmic ties, how to integrate the ethics and freedom of Karma Yoga in the counseling process, and how this automatically leads to the highest ethical standards.

PsyC-208: Advanced Nutritional Counseling -- Health Prevention, Youth and Life Extension, and Brain Optimization.

The search for enlightenment, the search for the realization that we are already Consciousness, requires a physical instrument -- and this is why souls incarnate. Therefore, learning to protect our body so that we can continue developing spiritually is of utmost importance.  The human body is presently under attack by many powerful factors that we ourselves have created.  This course addresses fundamental practical self-defense strategies to avoid becoming a victim of our own civilization. These include how to decrease inflammation, chelate heavy metals from the body and brain, reduce exposure to toxins and detoxifying the body using natural substances, combat viruses, bacteria and fungus using natural antibiotics, protecting the body and brain from the dangerous artificial substances that mimic hormones, and more.

PsyC-209: Jnana Yoga - The Yoga of Wisdom

This is one of the most fascinating courses in the program. The focus is on studying the life and teachings of the two greatest non-dual teachers from India -- Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadhata Maharaj. These two teachers are among the founder fathers of the modern non-duality movement in the world.

In India, non-dual teachers are called Jnanis and the non-dual path is called the path of Jnana Yoga (yoga of Wisdom). Jnana Yoga is the highest yoga, and although the lesser yogas are valuable, for an advanced soul it is advisable to focus on Jnana yoga and secondarily to practice a little bit of the other yogas.

This course focuses on the two most well-known contemporary teachers of non-duality in the East and West. They have contributed significantly to awaken humanity. Ramesh Balsekar and Eckhart Tolle can also be considered among the founder fathers of the modern non-duality movement in the East and West respectively .

To awaken the dreamer from the dream is to be no One
To realize the dream as the dreamer is to be One -- Jason Sawicki

This short bio was written by Jason at UHA's request and, except for minor details, left unedited. Jason has been one of our most advanced students and has a unique gift as a communicator -- not only in writing but also in person. Jason graduated as a Certified Spiritual Psychology Counselor from UHA, but most significant is his level of spiritual realization that transcends knowledge and degrees.

"Since I could remember, I had always found myself marveling at the inherent beauty of the world, feeling a deep peace in the silence and color of a sunset or a strange, compelling sense of expansion in a mountain range. Although I had never been religious [though my family was Catholic], this intuition kept me seeking truth. I studied the logical works of prominent atheists and witnessed the compassion in a love of God within religious followers. Still, I had a sense that Truth was beyond both. My first satori, a buddhist term for the word 'understanding', of my true nature, came to me on a foggy morning while driving down a quiet country road. Like a light switch that couldn't be turned off, I realized I had found what I had been looking for. Afterwards, I would come upon several spiritual teachers, both ancient and modern, whose teachings have helped point the way to further Self-realization. Having been a natural counselor to friends and family for many years, I was grateful to come upon the University of Healing Arts where I have since continued to develop both as a counselor and teacher.

On the personal side, I am married to a loving and compassionate wife and have two darling twin boys. We live in West Columbia, South Carolina and enjoy the ease and heartiness of southern culture. While big into backpacking and really all things outdoors, we also enjoy the ease and quiet of a lazy winter day."

PsyC-303: Healing through Awareness of Movement and Posture

Here the student learns how most individuals, by distancing themselves, from what is truly natural for the human body in regard to posture and movement, they do serious harm to their body-mind organism generating illness and suffering. Then, the student will be trained into the best ways to help oneself and clients to become aware of these patterns and take appropriate action. Our culture gives entirely the wrong message about sitting posture, ergonomics, breathing, walking, narrow vs. open focus and how to find relief when the body begins to complain. Through somatic awareness people change from the inside out – permanently and without dangerous side effects.

In this course Steve shares with our student his unique practical interventions, found through a long professional life devoted to healing, that produce quick and lasting results – and how to customize them for each client. Awareness applied to movement and posture lead to invaluable results such as; better posture, graceful movement, pain relief, mood improvement, better sleep, and more. You will learn easy ways to reduce or eliminate back pain, eye strain, neck tension, and leg, arm, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder pain.

We survey the destructive somatic implications of our stress inducing modern civilization, with its TV, video games, poorly designed car seats, computers, information overload and 10-hour workdays in front of a workstation.

The student will realize how chronic pain is nearly always the result of how the body has been used for so many years.  He/she will learn how to help the client shift from blame-the-body or themselves, to the experience of joyful, healing, neurological learning. The student will be able to teach the client a new way to walk, that actually creates a feeling of joy and relaxation, how to sit without back or neck pain, how to arrange the body while sleeping to avoid pain in the morning, how to shift gracefully from narrow focus vision to open focus, and much more.  Learning to move into open focus leads directly to the experience of meditation -- shifting the attention from mind to Consciousness. Using this awareness technology the client takes new hope, and progress on all levels is accelerated.

PsyC-305: Oneness

Science has proven that in the ultimate sense all matter is energy.  The Mystics have gone two steps further -- all energy is ultimately thought and thought is ultimately Consciousness.  Therefore, in the ultimate, every form in the Universe is frozen Consciousness.  And it is Consciousness or Awareness that is witnessing, and enjoying the Universe, through every sentient being and every atom. Thus frozen consciousness (form) and that which perceives it (awareness) are constantly in a subject-object relationship. However, because they are ultimately the same, then the subject-object division can be dissolved and Oneness realized.

Teacher: Forest Steven Whitaker

Forest is an American actor, producer, and director. His successes are too many to list here. You may check one of his many biographies available in the internet. He was a Surrogate for Barrack Obama's campaign supporting him across the United States.

Aside from his celebrity life, and his generous support to many humanitarian causes, Forest has devoted most of this lifetime to the spiritual search. His path lead him to the realization of the underlying Oneness that unites us all. Forest is a great example that spiritual advancement is not in conflict with vocational and material success. His interest in Consciousness and Spiritual Psychology lead him to the University of Healing Arts.
